B.A., M.S., J.D., University of Michigan. Before entering academia in 1973, Professor Adelman practiced as a patent attorney in the Detroit area for several years. During that period he served as lead counsel in several patent infringement actions, including for Motor City in the well-known Kolene v. Motor City litigation. Professor Adelman has written many law review articles on patent law, the economics of patent law and patent-antitrust law, and is the author of the eight-volume treatise Patent Law Perspectives (Matthew Bender). Professor Allen joined the law faculty in 1996, following his retirement from the U.S. Coast Guard. In law school, he was the Honor Graduate of his class, Editor-in-Chief of the Washington Law Review, and received the Carkeek Prize for legal writing. His teaching and research interests include maritime and international law and constitutional law issues in the conduct of international relations. He holds a merchant marine mariner's license, is a member of the federal and state bars in Oregon and Washington and the U.S. Supreme Court, the Maritime Law Association, the Nautical Institute, the Royal Institute of Navigation, the Order of the Coif and the Order of Barristers.
